On June 1, 2024, during the annual meeting of the Canadian Economics Association, VSE students Anna Chernesky and Jane Platt won both the Best Poster Award and the Best Paper Award, respectively. These awards are given each year to the students who presented the best research paper and poster, after already being selected for participation by the CEA and crafting their papers throughout the academic year under the mentorship of their advisors.
Anna Chernesky
Anna Chernesky’s research, titled “Migration and the Classroom: The Effects of Immigration on the Test Scores and School Experience of Native Students in Europe”, explores how the presence of immigrant peers in the classroom affects native student test scores in math, science, and reading in Europe. Anna was advised by Thomas Lemieux and Nicole Fortin through the BA honours program, and has a full profile for this work available through the Honours Student Poster Session page.
Jane Platt
Jane Platt’s research, titled “US Parental Involvement Laws: The Impacts in Access to Abortion on Teen Health” explores the effect of Parental Involvement Laws (PILs) on teen pregnancies and maternal morbidity, finding significantly higher birth and mortality rates for those subject to the restrictions. Jane was advised by Munir Squires and Nicole Fortin through the BA honours program, and has a full profile for this work available through the Honours Student Poster Session page.
Congratulations to Anna and Jane!
