Based on US patent data, Canadian-invented intellectual property (IP) is increasingly transferred or assigned to foreign entities, affecting Canadian ownership of U.S. patents, according to a new study co-authored by VSE Prof. Emeritus Nancy Gallini. Gallini and her co-author, Aidan Hollis from the University of Calgary, argue without patent ownership Canadian inventors looking to innovate, scale-up or commercialize in related tech sectors may be impeded.
