What are you up to post-graduation?
Christina Schwarz
I’m working at an Indian agricultural NGO, where I’m helping direct two research projects on the impact of dairying incomes for pastoral peoples, and the effectiveness of yield improvement practices on finger millet yields.
How did your economics degree prepare you for life after graduation?
It taught me a lot of practical skills that I use in my job every day– like econometrics, programming, and academic writing. It also taught me a lot of soft skills, like how to analyze arguments and think critically, how to discuss ideas with someone who has a different viewpoint, or how to think about causality.
Why study economics at UBC?
You’ll spend time with a group of truly incredible peers and professors, and you’ll get to do so in what I think is the most beautiful city in the world.
Why did you choose the BIE program?
I wanted to learn about economics from a development perspective. I wanted to understand why poverty persists and what sort of solutions the economics community is working on today. BIE was an exceptional place to learn these things; it provided a wide range of courses regarding poverty and development, and the required courses allowed me to diversify my interests.
What was the one memorable or best experience at the VSE?
For me, a memorable experience was being a TA for Understanding Globalisation. I loved the discussions I had with my students, who I found to be intelligent, caring young people. Although I was meant to be teaching, I ended up learning a lot!
What advice do you have for BIE students?
You’ll learn as much inside the classroom, as outside. Spend time with your peers, discuss big ideas, attend talks, seminars, and campus events. UBC is a great place to learn and thrive, so take advantage!
