Emmet Hall-Hoffarth, a graduating Honours Economics student at the Vancouver School of Ecoonomics at UBC, has won the Governor General’s Silver Medal in Arts, one of the most prestigious academic awards a student may receive in Canada.
At UBC, Hall-Hoffarth’s research focused on the market effects of data breaches and whether the threat of consumer reactions can incentivize firms to invest sufficiently in preventative security infrastructure. This fall, he will continue his studies at the University of Oxford, in their MPhil Economics program.
“I am very honoured to have received this award, which is the culmination of four years of hard work,” he said. “It gives me the confidence moving forward to work on contributions in the areas that interest me such as online markets and the implications of an algorithmic society while studying at the University of Oxford.”
Hall-Hoffarth’s record at UBC was deemed the best in the graduating class in the opinion of the faculty of arts. He was presented the medal at VSE’s graduation ceremony on May 24, 2019.
