LAW STUDENT, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
Hometown: Beijing, China
How did your economics degree prepare you for your next challenge?
I’m looking to go into corporate law, so it’s crucial to understand how the economy works and how economic variables potentially affect firms.
Why study economics at UBC?
Economics courses were my favorite in first year (I was in BA in my freshman year) and VSE is the best economics department in Canada.
Why did you choose the BIE program?
I was debating between going into Honours Econ and BIE. I transferred into BIE because the courses are more practical, the cohort design allows a tight bond with fellow students, and the BIE professors are among the best in the department.
What skill have you learned with your degree that you value the most?
Economic analysis skills – knowing what indication a change in one economic parameter may have on the whole economy.
What was your most memorable or best experience at the VSE?
I worked as a BIE Peer Academic Advisor for the past two years. I sat out in the hallways during my office hours and got the chance to talk to almost all the students and professors who walked by. I learned that it often doesn’t take more than a ‘Hi’ to start a friendly conversation, and people are usually nicer than previously thought.
What advice do you have for BIE students?
Don’t be afraid to try out different things.
Favourite place in Vancouver?
Canada Place.
