In April 2017, Sofiya Muzychko landed a position in the research and statistics unit of British Columbia’s Ministry of Agriculture, putting her reservations about moving aside, packing her bags, and moving to Victoria for the summer.

Although she was initially determined to go into the private sector, Sofiya enjoyed that her position in the provincial government granted her room to learn and ask questions, exposing her to unique opportunities she would not have experienced elsewhere.

“It ended up being an awesome experience professionally,” she says. “I got to meet so many great people, and I ended up sitting in trade meetings and hearing the freshest news about NAFTA discussions.”

During her time in Victoria, Sofiya gave an internal presentation on key findings for the census of agriculture, and walked away from the position with a network of government contacts.

In September, she flew to Toronto to start a new position in Equity Research at RBC Capital Markets, applying her economics and commerce background as well as data analysis skills she gained at the Ministry of Agriculture.

“I think this is for sure the best decision that I have made throughout my academic career,” she says of co-op. “You end up graduating not only with your degree and some sort of technical skills – you end up graduating with a network, with professional experience, and you get to try stuff out.”
