How did your economics degree prepare you for life after graduation?
The analytical, technical, and communication skills that I built have been incredibly important. And this is in addition to the network of really intelligent folks that the VSE attracts.
Why study economics at UBC?
UBC has a wide variety of opportunities for those who seek it, whether that’s the Arts Internship Program, International Service Learning or taking seminars as part of the Lind Initiative. The professors here are some of the top researchers in their field. Together, that means really high expectations and results for students, both academically and professionally.
Why did you choose the BIE program?
I knew I wanted to study economics from the get-go, and BIE’s direct entry option was well suited for me. Combined with the highly international student body, and coming from an international background myself, BIE was a perfect fit.
What skill have you learned through your studies that you value the most?
Economics offers very practical skillsets (even though it might not seem like it at the outset) as you’re forced to synthesize arguments and data into insightful writing or presentations. Although it seems fluffy, it’s an often unappreciated skillset that’s valued in whatever profession you choose after your degree.
What was your most memorable experience at the VSE?
Although it was a tragedy, the passing of a close friend of ours in the BIE program brought together the VSE in a way I haven’t seen before. I will always remember this place as not just a school or a community, but a family.
What advice do you have for BIE students?
I would encourage everyone to explore opportunities by forcing themselves out of their comfort zones. The most valuable relationships and experiences I’ve had included the Arts Internship Program, International Service Learning, the Lind Initiative and my Residence Advisor-ship in second year. I’d also encourage them to start exploring the professional world from the beginning of their studies, whether that’s doing a part-time job or going to professional events. And make sure you build good relationships with your professors, they’re an invaluable resource!

Rain or Shine Ice Cream. Not a day goes by where I don’t miss their seasonal flings.
