Governor General Medal Winner Behrooz Ghorbani

A special congratulations to Behrooz Ghorbani on receiving the Governor-General’s Silver Medal! Behrooz is the seventh economics graduate from UBC’s Bachelor of Arts in economics programs to win the prestigious award. He was also honoured in February for his academic achievements with a Wesbrook Scholarship. Behrooz graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree (Major in Economics and Major in Mathematics).

“It was a great honor to receive the Governor General’s Silver Medal,” says Behrooz. “This represents all that I have accomplished at UBC and will motivate me to continue my tradition of excellence in the future.”

“I owe much of my success to the training I received at Vancouver School of Economics,” continues Behrooz. “Under the supervision of the VSE faculty, I was given the opportunity to do independent research projects in financial economics and econometric analysis of large datasets. Next year I will begin my Ph.D. studies at Stanford University, where I will be using the skills that I have learned at VSE to help researchers and practitioners overcome challenges faced in the analysis of high-dimensional financial data.”

“It has been a great privilege for me to work with Behrooz,” says Assistant Professor Joshua Gottlieb, an academic supervisor to Behrooz. “He is dedicated and creative in all of his work, and I am thrilled that the Governor General granted him such a prestigious award. I wish Behrooz great success in his future endeavors, and expect to see great things from him in graduate school and beyond.”

For more than 125 years, the Governor General’s Academic Medals have recognized the outstanding scholastic achievements of students in Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest average, and are the most prestigious award students in Canadian schools can receive. Medals are presented on behalf of the Governor General by participating educational institutions, along with a personalized certificate signed by the Governor General. The Silver Medal is awarded at the undergraduate level.
